Unlike traditional hotel-based travel, you can change your itinerary spontaneously, wake up to breathtaking views in different locations each morning, and access remote areas where accommodation is scarce or non-existent. Iceland’s hotel infrastructure is concentrated in Reykjavik and major towns, making campervans particularly valuable for exploring the countryside, coastal areas, Golden Circle and highlands. You’ll also save significantly on accommodation costs, which can be expensive in Iceland, whilst enjoying the convenience of having your transportation and lodging in one vehicle.

The main difference lies in size and interior space. Campervans (like our Fiat Doblo Maxi, Renault Trafic, and VW Caddy models) are converted vans that typically sleep 2-3 people and offer basic amenities in a compact, easy-to-drive package. They’re more fuel-efficient and easier to park. Motorhomes (such as our Motorhome 3 and Motorhome 4) are purpose-built, larger vehicles with separate living areas, more headroom, additional storage space, and often sleep 4-5 people. Motorhomes provide more comfort and amenities but are slightly less manoeuvrable and consume more fuel. For Iceland’s road conditions, both work excellently on main routes, though campervans offer better agility on narrower roads.

Only designated 4×4 campervans are permitted on Iceland’s F-roads (Highland roads). Our 4×4 models, including the Dacia Duster, Jeep Renegade, Jeep Wrangler, VW California 4×4, Toyota Hilux, and similar vehicles, are specifically approved for Highland access. These roads require vehicles with higher ground clearance, four-wheel drive capability, and robust construction to handle river crossings, rough terrain, and challenging conditions. Standard campervans and motorhomes must stay on paved roads and non-F-road gravel routes. F-roads are typically only open during the summer months (June-September), and conditions vary significantly. We strongly recommend checking road conditions with the Icelandic Road Administration before attempting any Highland routes.

You just need a valid driving license from your home country. An international driving license is only required for licenses that use a non-Roman alphabet. Drivers must also be at least 20 years old, and we do have the option of an extra driver if needed.

All our prices include unlimited mileage, basic insurance (CDW), and standard camping equipment. Additional costs to budget for include extra insurance coverage (optional but recommended), fuel, campsite fees, and any optional extras like GPS units or additional driver insurance. Every Rent.is campervan comes fully equipped for camping. You’ll receive bedding (duvets, pillows, bed linen for the number of sleepers), complete cooking equipment including a gas stove with a full gas canister, pots, pans, cutlery, plates, cups, and all cooking utensils. We also provide camping table and chairs for outdoor dining, washing-up supplies (liquid, sponge, tea towels), and a cooler box or fridge, depending on the vehicle model. Heating systems (Webasto or electric) are included to keep you comfortable during cold nights. What you’ll need to bring: personal toiletries, towels, and food supplies. Optional extras like sleeping bags, GPS units, and WiFi hotspots can be added to your booking for an additional fee.

Wild camping (parking and sleeping just anywhere) is illegal in Iceland. You must stay at designated campsites, which are found throughout the country in towns, near attractions, and in remote areas. Iceland has over 170 official campsites offering facilities like toilets, showers, electricity hookups, and water fill points. Prices usually range from ISK 1,500-2,500 ($12-$20) per person per night. Many campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving earlier in the day during peak season is advisable. Some campgrounds accept camping cards (like the Camping Card Iceland), offering unlimited stays at participating sites for a flat fee. A few locations offer ‘parking spots’ for motorhomes overnight, but these are clearly marked and limited. Respecting these rules helps preserve Iceland’s fragile natural environment.
