Budget-Friendly Campervans

Looking for cheap campervan rental in Iceland without sacrificing quality? Our compact campervan fleet offers excellent value for budget-conscious travelers. These vehicles are perfect for couples or solo adventurers exploring Iceland’s Ring Road, with lower daily rates and better fuel economy than larger motorhomes.

Best Budget Options:

  • Fiat Doblo Maxi – Sleeps 2, perfect for summer Ring Road trips
  • Renault Kangoo – Compact and easy to drive, ideal for first-time campervan renters
  • VW Caddy – Slightly more space while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency

What’s Included: All our budget campervans come with essential camping equipment, including bed linen, camping stove, cooking utensils, and unlimited mileage. You’ll save money on accommodation while experiencing Iceland’s incredible nature.

4×4 Campers for Highland Adventures

Planning to explore Iceland’s Highland interior and F-roads? You’ll need a 4×4 camper. These rugged vehicles are legally required for F-roads (mountain roads) and provide the ground clearance and traction needed for river crossings and rough terrain. Our 4×4 camper rental fleet is ready for serious off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Highland-Ready 4×4 Vehicles:

  • Toyota Hilux – The Highland workhorse, proven reliability for F-roads
  • Dacia Duster 4×4 – Affordable 4×4 capability for Highland routes
  • VW California 4×4 – Premium 4×4 camper with superior comfort
  • Jeep Renegade – Compact 4×4 perfect for couples seeking Highland access
  • Suzuki Jimny – Budget-friendly 4×4 for minimalist Highland explorers

Important: If you plan to drive F-roads like the famous Landmannalaugar route, Askja caldera, or Thorsmork valley, a 4×4 vehicle is mandatory by Icelandic law. Our 4×4 campervans provide the capability you need while still offering comfortable sleeping arrangements and essential amenities.

Motorhome Rentals for Family Travel

Traveling with family or a larger group? Our motorhome rental fleet offers the space, comfort, and amenities you need for an unforgettable Iceland road trip. With standing height, bathroom facilities, and sleeping space for 4-5 people, motorhomes provide a home-on-wheels experience that makes multi-week Iceland adventures comfortable and practical.

Motorhome Options:

  • Renault Master 5 – Sleeps 5, full kitchen, bathroom, perfect for families
  • Renault Trafic 3 – Sleeps 3-4, compact motorhome for Ring Road touring
  • Crosscamp Models – Modern motorhomes with premium amenities

Motorhome Advantages: Unlike compact campervans, motorhomes in Iceland offer standing height (no more hunching over!), dedicated bathroom facilities, larger refrigerators, and significantly more storage. They’re ideal for families with children, longer trips (2+ weeks), or travelers who prioritize comfort and space.

How to Choose the Right Campervan for Your Iceland Trip

Selecting the perfect campervan or motorhome depends on four key factors:

1. Your Route

Ring Road Only: Any vehicle works – choose based on budget and group size

Highland F-Roads: Mandatory 4×4 requirement – choose from our 4×4 camper fleet

Mixed Routes: 4×4 camper recommended for maximum flexibility

2. Group Size

1-2 People: Compact campervan or mid-size campervan

2-3 People: Mid-size campervan or small motorhome

4+ People: Full-size motorhome required

3. Budget

Budget-Conscious: Compact campervans offer the best rates

Mid-Range: Standard campervans and small motorhomes

Premium: 4×4 campervans and large motorhomes with full amenities

4. Season

Summer (June-August): All vehicles suitable, highest demand

Winter (November-March): 4×4 strongly recommended for safety and access

Shoulder Season (April-May, Sept-Oct): Any vehicle, but 4×4 adds flexibility

Iceland Campers: Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t see your question here? Check out our FAQ page or contact us with questions!

We offer a comprehensive range of campervans and motorhomes to suit every travel style and group size. Our fleet includes compact 2-person campervans like the Fiat Doblo Maxi and Renault Kangoo, mid-sized options like the Renault Trafic 3 for three people, spacious motorhomes like the Renault Master 5 sleeping up to five people, and 4×4 campers with Highland access, including the Toyota Hilux, Jeep Wrangler, and VW California 4×4. We provide both manual and automatic transmission options across most categories, giving you flexibility to choose based on your driving preferences and budget.

Absolutely! A campervan offers unmatched freedom and flexibility to explore Iceland at your own pace. Unlike traditional hotel-based travel, you can change your itinerary spontaneously, wake up to breathtaking views in different locations each morning, and access remote areas where accommodation is scarce or non-existent. Iceland’s hotel infrastructure is concentrated in Reykjavik and major towns, making campervans particularly valuable for exploring the countryside, coastal areas, Golden Circle and highlands. You’ll also save significantly on accommodation costs, which can be expensive in Iceland, whilst enjoying the convenience of having your transportation and lodging in one vehicle.

The main difference lies in size and interior space. Campervans (like our Fiat Doblo Maxi, Renault Trafic, and VW Caddy models) are converted vans that typically sleep 2-3 people and offer basic amenities in a compact, easy-to-drive package. They’re more fuel-efficient and easier to park. Motorhomes (such as our Motorhome 3 and Motorhome 4) are purpose-built, larger vehicles with separate living areas, more headroom, additional storage space, and often sleep 4-5 people. Motorhomes provide more comfort and amenities but are slightly less manoeuvrable and consume more fuel. For Iceland’s road conditions, both work excellently on main routes, though campervans offer better agility on narrower roads.

Only designated 4×4 campervans are permitted on Iceland’s F-roads (Highland roads). Our 4×4 models, including the Dacia Duster, Jeep Renegade, Jeep Wrangler, VW California 4×4, Toyota Hilux, and similar vehicles, are specifically approved for Highland access. These roads require vehicles with higher ground clearance, four-wheel drive capability, and robust construction to handle river crossings, rough terrain, and challenging conditions. Standard campervans and motorhomes must stay on paved roads and non-F-road gravel routes. F-roads are typically only open during the summer months (June-September), and conditions vary significantly. We strongly recommend checking road conditions with the Icelandic Road Administration before attempting any Highland routes.

Booking with Rent.is is straightforward. Browse our fleet above and click ‘Book’ on your preferred vehicle to check availability and pricing for your travel dates. You’ll complete your reservation and select your payment methods. We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for summer travel (June-August) when demand is highest and vehicles sell out quickly. Once booked, you’ll receive confirmation with all details, including pickup instructions, our shuttle service information from Keflavik Airport, and what to expect on collection day. Our team is available via email or phone if you have any questions during the booking process or need help choosing the right camper for your Iceland adventure.

You just need a valid driving license from your home country. An international driving license is only required for licenses that use a non-Roman alphabet. Drivers must also be at least 20 years old, and we do have the option of an extra driver if needed.

With Rent.is, you’ll get reliable vehicles, great value, and the best prices year-round. Every rental is fully equipped, backed by excellent service, and designed to make your trip unforgettable. Whether you’re setting off to visit Iceland’s main attractions, chase the Northern Lights, or relax in a geothermal lagoon, our team is super helpful and ready to make your journey smooth from pick up to return.

Campervan rental costs vary depending on vehicle size, season, and rental duration. Compact 2-person campervans typically start from around ISK 16,000-22,000 ($130-$175) per day in low season, whilst larger motorhomes and 4×4 Highland-capable vehicles range from ISK 25,000-45,000 ($210-$360) per day. Summer months (June-August) command premium pricing due to high demand and Iceland’s peak tourism season. Longer rental periods often qualify for discounted daily rates. All our prices include unlimited mileage, basic insurance (CDW), and standard camping equipment. Additional costs to budget for include extra insurance coverage (optional but recommended), fuel, campsite fees, and any optional extras like GPS units or additional driver insurance. Use our booking tool for a precise quote based on your specific travel dates and vehicle preference.

Every Rent.is campervan comes fully equipped for camping. You’ll receive bedding (duvets, pillows, bed linen for the number of sleepers), complete cooking equipment including a gas stove with a full gas canister, pots, pans, cutlery, plates, cups, and all cooking utensils. We also provide camping table and chairs for outdoor dining, washing-up supplies (liquid, sponge, tea towels), and a cooler box or fridge, depending on the vehicle model. Heating systems (Webasto or electric) are included to keep you comfortable during cold nights. What you’ll need to bring: personal toiletries, towels, and food supplies. Optional extras like sleeping bags, GPS units, and WiFi hotspots can be added to your booking for an additional fee.

Wild camping (parking and sleeping just anywhere) is illegal in Iceland. You must stay at designated campsites, which are found throughout the country in towns, near attractions, and in remote areas. Iceland has over 170 official campsites offering facilities like toilets, showers, electricity hookups, and water fill points. Prices usually range from ISK 1,500-2,500 ($12-$20) per person per night. Many campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving earlier in the day during peak season is advisable. Some campgrounds accept camping cards (like the Camping Card Iceland), offering unlimited stays at participating sites for a flat fee. A few locations offer ‘parking spots’ for motorhomes overnight, but these are clearly marked and limited. Respecting these rules helps preserve Iceland’s fragile natural environment.
