The collection and return arrangements were excellent, but most importantly the vehicle suited our needs. i was a bit concerned that we may have gone overboard on the 4×4 aspect given the condition of the main roads we encountered seeing other motorhomes satisfactorily using the same roads. However, we then encountered a snowstorm where all the roads were covered with deep layers of snow or compacted ice. Then, the 4×4 came into its own and provided a safe driving platform. Two experiences we found in driving such a vehicle is that there are always plenty of fuel stations on our routes, but open campsites can be a bit rare in the east in October. All in all an excellent way to look at Iceland and an excellent rental arrangement with Rent.Is. “

F-roads are seasonal. Most open between late June and September, depending on snowmelt and conditions. Always check road.is before setting out — entering a closed F-road is illegal and can result in significant fines.
Off-roading is strictly illegal in Iceland. F-road authorization means driving on designated tracks only. Driving off marked roads, even briefly, damages Iceland’s fragile moss and lava landscapes, which can take centuries to recover. Fines are severe.
River crossings require caution. Some F-roads include unbridged river crossings. Never cross a glacial river without assessing the depth and flow first. If in doubt, wait for another vehicle or turn back.
