Why the Motorhome 3 Stands Out
Compact but fully equipped
This motorhome offers a great balance between size and functionality. It’s compact enough to handle comfortably on Iceland’s roads, while still including everything you need for a self-sufficient trip, from sleeping space to cooking facilities.
Easier to drive than large RVs
Compared to bigger motorhomes, this model is more manageable behind the wheel. It’s easier to park, navigate through towns, and handle on narrower roads, making it a good option for drivers who want comfort without the bulk of a large RV.
Ideal for Icelandic conditions
Built for travel on Iceland’s main roads, this motorhome provides a stable and comfortable driving experience in changing weather. It’s well-suited for the Ring Road and popular sightseeing routes, giving you flexibility without the need for off-road capability.
Who Is This Motorhome Best For?
Choosing the right vehicle can make a big difference to your Iceland trip. Here’s a quick guide to whether Motorhome 3 is the right fit for your travel plans.
Ideal For
Small families (2 adults + child)
With space to sleep and relax, this motorhome works well for small families who want to travel together comfortably while keeping everything in one place.
Couples wanting comfort
For couples who prefer more space and convenience than a basic camper, this motorhome offers a more relaxed and comfortable way to explore Iceland.
First-time Iceland travelers
If it’s your first time visiting Iceland, this is an easy and practical option. You get the freedom of a camper with added comfort, without needing experience driving larger vehicles.
Not Ideal For
Large groups
This motorhome is designed for smaller groups, so larger parties may find it too limited in space and seating.
Highland / F-Road travel
Like most motorhomes, this vehicle is not suitable for Iceland’s F-Roads or Highland routes. If you’re planning to explore those areas, a 4×4 camper would be a better choice.
Motorhome vs Campervan in Iceland
Choosing between a motorhome and a campervan in Iceland depends on your travel style, budget, and comfort preferences. Both options let you explore the country at your own pace, but they offer very different experiences on the road.
The Motorhome 3 is designed for travelers who want more space, comfort, and built-in facilities, while campervans are better suited for those who prioritize simplicity, lower costs, and easier driving.

With the Motorhome 3, you benefit from extra living space, a private bathroom, and a more comfortable setup for longer trips or unpredictable weather. This makes it a great option for families, couples, or anyone planning an extended journey around Iceland.
A campervan, on the other hand, like the VW California, tends to be more compact and budget-friendly. They’re easier to drive and park, making them a popular choice for solo travelers or couples who don’t mind a simpler setup.
If comfort, convenience, and space are priorities, the Motorhome 3 is the better choice. If you’re looking to save money and keep things minimal, a campervan may be a better fit.

Driving a Motorhome in Iceland
Driving a motorhome in Iceland is a unique and rewarding experience, but it’s important to understand the road conditions, weather, and local rules before you set off. With the right preparation, it’s a comfortable and straightforward way to explore the country.
Road conditions
Most travelers stick to the Ring Road (Route 1), which is paved and well-maintained, making it suitable for motorhomes like the Motorhome 3. However, some rural roads can be narrow or gravel, so it’s important to drive carefully and allow extra time for your journey.
F-Roads (mountain roads leading into the Highlands) are not accessible in motorhomes and require a 4×4 vehicle. Always check your planned route in advance to avoid restricted roads.
Weather considerations
As mentioned, Iceland’s weather can change quickly, even in summer. Wind is one of the biggest factors when driving a motorhome, as larger vehicles are more affected by strong gusts.
Rain, fog, and occasional snow (outside peak summer) can also impact visibility and road conditions. It’s a good idea to check daily forecasts and road updates before driving, especially if you’re covering longer distances.
Parking rules
Motorhomes must be parked in designated areas or campsites overnight. Stopping on the side of the road or in random locations to sleep is not permitted.
When visiting popular attractions, you’ll find designated parking lots, but spaces can be limited during peak season. Arriving early or later in the day can make parking easier.
Campsite requirements
If you’re traveling in a motorhome, you are required to stay in official campsites. These are located all around Iceland and offer facilities such as toilets, showers, electricity, and waste disposal.
Many campsites are open from late spring through early autumn, aligning with the main travel season. Planning your stops in advance helps ensure a smoother trip, especially during busy months.
Can You Camp Anywhere in Iceland?
No, you cannot camp just anywhere in Iceland, especially when traveling in a motorhome. Following on from campsite requirements, all motorhomes and campervans must stay overnight in designated campsites.
Wild camping in vehicles is restricted and generally not allowed on roadsides, in laybys, car parks, or on private land without permission. These rules are in place to protect Iceland’s natural landscapes and ensure a better experience for all travelers.
The good news is that Iceland has a wide network of campsites located along the Ring Road and in most popular travel areas. These sites are easy to access and typically offer useful facilities like toilets, showers, and waste disposal, making motorhome travel both practical and comfortable.
For the best experience, plan your overnight stops in advance and stick to official campsites throughout your trip.
How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Motorhome in Iceland?
The cost of renting a motorhome in Iceland varies depending on the season, availability, and demand. Prices are typically highest during the summer months (June–August) and lower in the shoulder seasons like spring and autumn.
For the Motorhome 3, you can expect approximate daily rates in the following range:
High season (summer): from around 53.000 ISK / $425 USD per day
Winter season: from around 39.000 ISK / $313 USD per day
Low season (spring & autumn): from around 42.000 ISK / $337 USD per day
While a motorhome may seem like a higher upfront cost compared to a small rental car, it often works out as excellent value when you consider what’s included. Your vehicle also acts as your accommodation, kitchen, and transport all in one.
In Iceland, hotel rooms can easily cost $150–$300+ per night plus the cost of tours or rental cars, especially during peak season. With a motorhome, you avoid those costs while gaining the flexibility to travel at your own pace and stay closer to nature.
For couples or small families, this can make motorhome travel both a practical and cost-effective way to explore Iceland.
