AGE REQUIREMENT AND DRIVERS LICENSE:
A full driver’s license must have been held for at least 12 months and must presented at the start of the rental. Renter must be 18 years of age to rent a vehicle.
Costumers under the age of 20 years, must purchase a Premium insurance (PIP) or Platinum zero insurance (PZP) when renting vehicle.
Each driver will need to provide a valid driver’s license. If the License is written in non-Latin characters, they’ll also need to provide a valid international Driving permit or a certified translation.
Please note that digital /electronic licenses issued in other countries are not valid for Iceland.
MAIN DRIVER
The lessee is automatically listed as the main driver. Any other driver can be added as an extra driver. Any wishes to change the main driver, shall be done through email minimum 48 hours before picking up. This cannot be done upon arrival.
Only the main driver is eligible to pick up the reserved vehicle.
CREDIT CARD IMPRINT:
All rentals are subject to the full rental agreement terms and conditions at the time of rental. A credit card imprint will be taken at the start of all rentals for security reasons, even when a voucher covers the cost of the rental. This credit card imprint may be used to pay all extra charges as extra insurance, parking fines, damages, or any cost due to the rented car as a result of the renter’s use of the car.
The credit card shall be of a listed driver, please note that the owner must be present.
Prepaid credit/debit cards are not excepted for this step unless PIP or PZP insurance is purchased.
DEPOSIT:
At pick-up, a listed driver must leave a refundable security deposit of 450.000ISK on their credit card.
Cash, prepaid credit, debit cards and electronic payments (f.x. Apple pay/android pay) are not accepted for the deposit. A physical credit card is required.

A deposit and Credit card is not required if renter purchases an insurance package, either Premium Package or Platinum Package.
FINE DEPOSIT:
All rentals require a mandatory, refundable fines deposit of 15.000isk regardless of the insurance option selected.
CAR TYPES:
We reserve the right to substitute vehicles when the reserved car types is not available, either with a similar car or higher class.
CROSSCAMP FLEX:
The crosscamp flex is a 2WD vehicle that is permitted to drive on certain “F” roads. Roads No. 35 (Kjölur), No. 550 (Kaldidalur) and No. 208 towards Landmannalaugar (only up to the river before the campsite). The vehicle is not allowed to cross rivers.
A penalty fee of 100.000 ISK will be charged if the car is driven on unauthorized roads.
MOTORHOMES
All our Motorhomes (Crosscamp Flex/Lux & Motorhome 3) are required to be brought back clean, with grey and black water tanks empty. Cleaning fee 45.000 ISK. Crosscamp Lux must be returned with one full sized, sealed gas bottle.
Waste/black water tank cleaning fee is 250 Euro.
FUEL TANK:
The vehicle should be returned with the same fuel level as stated at the beginning. If the car is returned with less fuel, we will charge the cost for the missing fuel, plus a service fee of 5.000ISK.
TAX:
Local value added tax (VAT) 24% is included in all prices.
ROAD TAX:
Please be advised that, in compliance with law no. 101 dated 27th December, the Icelandic government has instituted a Road Tax Fee effective from January 1st , 2024. This fee is applicable to electric cars, hydrogen cars, and plug-in hybrid cars.
To simplify the process for our customers and ensure transparency and convenience, Rent.is will collect the Road Tax Fee at the beginning of the rental period.
The amount collected is 500 ISK per day and is based on the average distance covered by our renters in 2022 and 2023. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation.
KILOMETER CHARGE ADJUSTMENT
In accordance with potential changes to Icelandic law, a government-imposed road or kilometer charge may be introduced for all motor vehicles. Should such a charge come into effect, Rent.is reserves the right to apply this fee to any existing or future reservation.
The amount will be calculated as a fair estimate based on the official rate and the vehicle’s average usage during the rental period.
CANCELLATION POLICY:
If a reservation is cancelled 24 hours before pick up time a full refund is issued.
In case of a No-Show or last minute cancellation we charge the full rental amount.
Rent.is is authorized to cancel a reservation if the vehicle in the reserved class or higher is damaged/not rentable from the previous renter or due to a delay in production.
MODIFICATION POLICY:
Modifications made less than 24 hours before the scheduled pick-up time will not be eligible for price adjustments or discounts. This includes, but is not limited to, changes due to delayed flights, early returns, or downgrades in vehicle category.
We will do our best to accommodate last-minute changes where possible. Please note that the original booking price will remain valid, and no partial refunds will be issued for unused rental time or category changes initiated within 24 hours of pick-up.
VEHICLE PICK UP FEE:
450 ISK per KM.
INSURANCE
Third party liability (CDW) is equivalent to the amount stipulated by Icelandic law at each time. This also applies to the amount of individual driver liability.
When selecting a liability amount during your booking process, it’s crucial to understand that this figure represents the maximum responsibility you’ll have in the event of any damages incurred during the rental period.
However, it’s essential to note that this liability amount is not a cumulative total for all damages but rather a full liability in each instance of damage.
Third party coverage and personal accident insurance is included in your rental.
Basic Insurance – Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) – Included

Third party liability insurance shall be equivalent to the amount stipulated by Icelandic law at the time. The lessee is fully responsible for any and all damage to the car. Normally by purchasing CDW the lessee can insure himself against the disbursement of the driver liability.
Damages not included in CDW; Sand and ash damages, Tire protection, wind-blown doors, damages caused by driving in rivers or any watercourse, damages to the underside and chassis (e.g. hitting the car under or a rock puncture), damages to rims, lost accessories, gross negligence, driving while intoxicated, towing or assistance.

Platinum Plus Insurance Package (PZP) – RECOMMENDED
Self risk in case of damage 0 ISK
Insurance including all insurance (CDW – SCDW – TP – GP – SAAP – TIREP)
Included extras: WIFI hotspot, 3x Extra drivers and Free child seats.
Damages not included in PZP; Wind-blown doors, damages caused by driving in rivers or any watercourse, damages to the underside and chassis (e.g. hitting the car under or a rock puncture), damages to rims, lost accessories, gross negligence, driving while intoxicated, towing or assistance.
Charges for damage are based on the normal market price for a quality repair using software called CABAS, which is recognized by Insurance companies worldwide. It is not economical to repair every scratch and dent, and therefore some charges are based on the decrease in value of the car if it were sold with the damage.
THE FOLLOWING DAMAGES ARE NOT COVERED BY ANY INSURANCE
- Damages to the underside of the vehicle.
- Water damage due to or after driving across rivers or any kind of watercourse.
- Damages caused to the clutch or other mechanical components.
- Damages caused by entering or attempting to enter a space that is not wide enough or tall enough to accommodate the vehicle.
- Damages caused by putting the wrong fuel in the fuel tank.
- Damages to the interior of the car, including holes burned into seats, carpets, ceilings or mats.
- Any assistance or towing. (Vehicle transportation fee 450ISK per km).
- Intentional damage or damage due to gross negligence on the part of the driver.
- Damages caused by a non-registered driver
- Damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, stimulants, or sedatives, or in any other way incapable of driving the vehicle safely.
- Damage due to race or test driving.
- Damage due to war, revolution, civil unrest, and riots.
- Damage affecting only wheels, tires, suspension, batteries, glass/windows, radios, or theft of parts of the vehicle, and damage resulting from this.
- Damages to rims, including but not limited to cracks, bends, or other structural impairments
- Damage resulting from driving in places where vehicle traffic is banned, such as paths, tracks, banks of snow, ice, unbridged rivers, or streams. beaches, places only accessible at low tide, or other trackless areas.
- If the vehicle is transported by sea, no compensation will be paid for damage caused by sea spray/seawater.
THE FOLLOWING CHARGES ARE NOT COVERED BY ANY INSURANCE
- Road assistance or towing needed in cases such as getting stuck in snow, water, mud, sand and so on, as well as getting a flat tire.
- Road assistance or towing required because of a breakdown or damage that is the lessee’s responsibility.
- Cleaning fee for campers returned with an excessively dirty interior.
- Penalty fee for driving on unauthorized roads.
- Charges when putting the wrong fuel in the vehicle.
- Charges for loosing accessories like GPS, WIFI hotspot, Keys, Roof-box or Roof tent.
- Service charges and handling fees related to the lessee’s use of the car, such as parking fines, speeding. fines, tunnels fees or returning the vehicle with less fuel.
Service fee
There is a service fee for up to 5.000ISK added to all fines or charges due to the lessee’s use of the vehicle. Fines are charged with the added service fee.
Our vehicles are non-smoking.
If evidence or odor of smoking is found, the lessee will be charged a deep cleaning fee of 45.000ISK.

RENTAL AGREEMENT - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Obligations of the Lessee:
- The lessee has read, understands and agrees to the provisions of this lease and has received a copy of it.
- The Lessor maintains an electronic record of the vehicle’s body condition, including any pre-existing damages. The Lessee agrees that this record will serve as the basis for assessing damages upon return of the vehicle. Any new damages identified will be charged accordingly, unless the Lessee can provide photographic proof, taken at the start of the rental period, showing the damages in question were pre-existing.
- The lessee and all drivers shall be at least 18 years old and shall have held a valid driver’s license for at least one year before renting the vehicle and must present a physical license.
- The lessee and drivers shall abide by Icelandic law and driving regulations.
- The vehicle must be returned:
- On the date and time specified in the rental agreement (unless extended in writing).
- At the designated return location.
- In the same condition as at handover, except for normal wear from proper use.
- The fuel tank must be at the same level as at pickup. Missing fuel will be charged together with a service fee.
- The vehicle must be reasonably clean and suitable for inspection. A cleaning fee of 45,000 ISK will apply for vehicles returned excessively dirty (e.g. mud, waste, interior debris).
- Motorhomes/Campervans: Must be returned with emptied grey and black water tanks and at least one full gas bottle if applicable. Failure to comply will result in a 250 EUR black-water cleaning fee.
- If the vehicle is returned more than one (1) hour late, the Lessor may charge up to an additional 24-hour rental rate.
- If the vehicle is left unattended or at an unauthorized location, the Lessee is liable for all recovery, transportation, and storage costs.
- If the lessee does not return the vehicle at the time agreed upon in this lease or does not declare his intention to extend the lease, the lessor or the police are authorized to repossess the vehicle without further notice and at the lessee’s cost. Extending the lease is dependent on the consent of the lessor.
- The vehicle shall be handled and driven carefully. Only those named as drivers on the first page of this agreement are authorized to drive.
- The lessee is liable for any damage to the vehicle during the period of the rental for which no compensation will be paid by the vehicle’s insurance company. This includes damage to the vehicle and/or injury to passengers due to the following:
- Off-road driving
- Driving across rivers or any kind of watercourse.
- Damages to the engine, radiator, or underside of the vehicle.
- Intentional acts or gross negligence.
- Use of intoxicants by the driver / Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Vehicle use that contravenes Icelandic law and/or the provisions of this lease.
- Strong wind.
- Driving vehicles that are not four-wheel drive (4×4) on roads that are F-marked
- Driving on closed roads as published by the Icelandic Road Administration
- In the event of a collision or accident, the lessee shall immediately notify the appropriate police authorities as well as the lessor, and the lessee may not leave the scene before the police arrive.
- The lessee is obligated to report any damages to the car, regardless of any insurance coverage assigned to the rental.
- The lessee agrees to pay the lessor, upon request:
- A deposit amounting to the estimated cost of hiring the car.
- Any and all expenses incurred by the lessor if he has to bring the vehicle back to his premises, if it has been left somewhere without supervision, without regard to the condition of the vehicle, the roads, or the weather.
- Kilometer based usage charge, estimate based on official rates and the vehicle’s average usage during the rental period.
- General charges for towing.
- The cost of required assistance.
- The cost of repairs needed for the vehicle, not covered by the selected insurance.
- Cost of any fines or charges resulting from the lessee’s rental. A handling fee of up to 5.000ISK is charged by the lessor for any official inquiry the company must respond to. The renter agrees that this fee and the fine/charge may be charged to the credit card provided by the lessee.
- The lessee is not authorized to have repairs done or make changes to the vehicle or its accessories, or to put the vehicle up as any kind of security, without the prior consent of the lessor.
- The lessee is liable for all parking meter charges and fines for breaking traffic laws.
- The lessee is not authorized to use the vehicle to transport passengers for payment, loan it to others, or sublease it.
- Smoking in the vehicle is strictly prohibited. Evidence of smoking or smoke odor will incur a minimum fee of 45.000 ISK.
Motorhome-Specific Terms
Motorhomes must be returned clean, with all waste tanks (grey water and black water) emptied, and with at least one full gas bottle if the vehicle uses gas heating. Insurance does not cover damages to the interior of motorhomes, including (but not limited to) broken items, accessories, electrical steps, roof tent lockers, fabrics, electrical systems, and mechanics. The vehicle must be returned in the same condition as at handover. Any stains, tears, dents, or broken items are the full responsibility of the renter. The cleaning fee is 45.000 ISK, and the black water cleaning fee is 250 euros. There is no stated self-risk in case of damage to motorhome-specific items or functionality, and the cost charged is matched to actual repair and part cost.
Obligations of the Lessor:
- The Lessor shall supply the vehicle at the agreed pickup time in safe and roadworthy condition.
- If a malfunction occurs due to normal wear and tear or causes for which the Lessee is not responsible, the Lessor will repair or replace the vehicle within 24 hours.
- No compensation or refund shall be paid for accommodation, delays, or other costs when a comparable vehicle or repair is arranged within that time frame.
- The Lessor shall inform the Lessee of Icelandic road rules, F-road restrictions, and risks related to wind and wildlife.
- The Lessor maintains valid liability insurance for business operations but is not responsible for loss or damage to personal items left in or transported with the vehicle.
Insurance and self-risk:
- The rental price includes mandatory third-party liability (CDW) and accident insurance as required by Icelandic law.
- Third-party liability insurance will consist of the amount stipulated by Icelandic law at any given time.
- A deposit for damages is taken at the start of the rental for the self-risk amount, if no additional insurance is selected. This shall be released after the final inspection of the vehicle.
- Optional insurance upgrades may be purchased to reduce the Lessee’s liability (SCDW, Premium (PIP), Platinum Plus PZP)).
- CDW and SCDW do not include/lower liability to the following:
- Damages caused by the wind blowing up the doors.
- Damages to the tires and service related to changing or repairing the tires.
- Damage caused by animals.
- Damage caused by sand, gravel, ash, pumice, or other kinds of earth material being blown onto the vehicle.
- Damages caused to the vehicle from standing, sitting, mounting, or climbing on the car, or from any actions that do not fall under regular use.
- In other instances, reference is made to the general conditions for CDW and SCDW insurance and toclause (6) of the insurance policy (stating what is never covered by any type of insurance).
- The lessee may purchase a special Premium package (CDW-SCDW-TP-GP-SAAP) or Platinum Plus package (CDW-SCDW-TP-GP-SAAP-TIREP).
- Insurance specification: All rentals include basic insurance/Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). The lessee can insure himself against the disbursement of the driver ‘s liability; the amount of the own-risk fee is according to the lessor ‘s pricelist at the given time and is also stated on the front side of this rental agreement. The lessee can purchase additional insurance packages which include individual coverage. Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) insurance and, by doing so, further lower the self-risk. Sand & Ash Damage Protection (SAAP) lowers liability to damage caused by sand or ash storm. Gravel Protection (GP) covers damages to the front windshield and body paint caused by pebbles or gravel. Tire protection (TIREP) covers the cost of repairing a punctured tire, Tire protection does not include assistance to change flat tires, or emergency tire services. Theft Protection (TP) covers damages to the vehicle if it gets stolen when parked with locked doors, all windows closed, and keys not in. Theft Protection does not cover damages caused by breaking and entering, nor does it cover the loss of personal belongings of the renter or passengers. Platinum Plus insurance (PZP) only reduces the self-risk of the SCDW down to a null amount. Platinum Plus Insurance does not free the renter from any liability in the events where these car rental terms are violated. Self-risk of additional insurances is stated on the front of the rental agreement.
- The following things are not covered by any insurance:
- Damages to the underside of the car; including damage caused by driving on rough roads to the vehicle’s transmission, drive, and other parts that are in or attached to the chassis; damage to the chassis resulting from the vehicle scraping bottom on rough roads as a result of ridges being left by road graders; stones lodged in the road surface or on the shoulder of the road. The same applies to damage occurring when stones are thrown up, striking the underside or radiator of the vehicle during driving.
- Water damage due to or after driving across rivers or any kind of watercourse, including but not limited to damage to the car’s electrical system, accessories, or engine.
- Damages caused to the clutch or other mechanical components.
- Damages caused by entering or attempting to enter a space that is not wide enough or tall enough to accommodate the vehicle. This includes, but is not limited to, damage caused by low ceilings, overhangs, narrow passages, or any other similar spatial restrictions.
- Damages caused by putting the wrong fuel in the fuel tank.
- Damages to the interior of the car, including holes burned into seats, carpets, ceilings or mats.
- Any assistance or towing. (Vehicle transportation fee 450ISK per km).
- Intentional damage or damage due to gross negligence on the part of the driver.
- Damages caused by a non-registered driver
- Damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, stimulants, or sedatives, or in any other way incapable of driving the vehicle safely.
- Damage due to race or test driving.
- Damage due to war, revolution, civil unrest, and riots.
- Damage affecting only wheels, tires, suspension, batteries, glass/windows, radios, or theft of parts of the vehicle, and damage resulting from this.
- Damages to rims, including but not limited to cracks, bends, or other structural impairments
- Damage resulting from driving in places where vehicle traffic is banned, such as paths, tracks, banks of snow, ice, unbridged rivers, or streams. beaches, places only accessible at low tide, or other trackless areas.
- If the vehicle is transported by sea, no compensation will be paid for damage caused by sea spray/seawater.
- Damage to or loss of accessories, such as the car keys, license plates, WIFI hotspot, GPS unit, kitchen utensils, sleeping bags, chairs, tables, roof box, or roof tent.
- The lessee agrees that any damages not covered by selected insurance to the vehicle are their responsibility and may be charged to the provided credit card/deposit.
General provisions:
- The lessee confirms with their signature on this rental agreement, the terms and the conditions, the vehicle condition report, and that the car and its accessories are in good condition.
- Additions and amendments to the conditions and provisions of this lease agreement shall be made in writing.
- Early returns are non-refundable.
- By providing their credit card details to the lessor, the lessee agrees with a signature on this rental agreement that the lessor is authorized to charge the card for the rental fee and any other fees, charges, or fines that may arise from this rental, without notice.
- With their signature on this rental agreement, the lessee agrees that the refundable security deposit for parking tickets and fees may be charged without notice. Said deposit shall be held for an additional 7 days after the return of the vehicle to allow time for tickets to appear.
- Icelandic law applies to agreements made based on the terms cited above. This includes any compensation claims that might be made. This applies both to the basis for and the calculation of compensation. The same applies to claims for damages based on liability outside this agreement. If legal disputes arise concerning this lease agreement, they will be heard before the lessor’s legal venue.
- It should be pointed out that disputes between the parties to this lease agreement can be submitted to the active Arbitration committee of the Icelandic Consumers Association and the Icelandic Travel Industry Association.
Icelandic Insurance policy:
Rent Nordic ehf is an insurance reseller on behalf of Sjóvá-Almennar tryggingar hf. and is officially registered with the Central Bank of Iceland as an authorized insurance reseller. By agreeing to the rental terms, the renter consents to the sharing of this agreement and its details with Sjóvá-Almennar. Insurance Product Information Documents (IPIDs), which outline key details about the insurance coverage, are available on the Sjóvá-Almennar website.
Rent Nordic ehf may receive a fee or commission from the renter for insurance products purchased in connection with the rental, in accordance with a prior agreement between the involved parties.
The rental price includes the legally required car insurance, which encompasses both liability and accident insurance for the driver and the owner of the vehicle. Third-party liability is provided according to the statutory limits in effect under Icelandic law. Before the insurance becomes active, Rent Nordic ehf will conduct a visual assessment of the vehicle to identify any existing damage and exclude such damage from coverage. By entering into this agreement, the renter acknowledges that the vehicle was received in satisfactory condition. The insurance terms, available under Skilmálar, form an integral part of this agreement. Renters are also advised to review the general terms and conditions on Sjóvá’s website, which apply to all Sjóvá-issued policies. Depending on the nature of any damage and the level of coverage selected, renters may be financially responsible for up to the full value of the vehicle. Optional upgrades for additional damage protection are available. All our rental cars include Third-Party Liability Insurance, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), and Kasko insurance with a liability of 450,000 ISK with Basic Insurance
