Only whale watching in Iceland, no whale hunting

Whale watching in Iceland has been popular since the early days of tourism. Loads of visitors comes here with the sole object to go whale watching. But the subject of whales here has been a sensitive issue because of whale hunting. Whale meat has been on the table in Iceland for a thousand years but will not be so this coming summer. Hvalur hf, the company who has been hunting whales have taken the save the whale approach for this season. The CEO of Hvalur hf, Kristján Loftsson, told Morgunblaðið he will not hunt for whales as long as the Japanese don’t follow the international standards for research hunting. “If we knew what the Japanese whale hunters where doing it, we wouldn’t have gone back to whale hunting back in 2009” Kristján told Morgunblaðið.

Whale hunting has been heavily criticized on the international scene. Even President Barack Obama the whale hunting here and our Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, has said whale hunting is damaging Iceland’s image.

So this summer of 2016 when you guys are camping around Iceland and are watching whales swimming leisurely along the coastline, you can be assured they are not being hunted this season and by the looks of it, it won’t happen anymore. Remember you have free WiFi in your Camper Van Rental so you can share your whale pictures with your friends at home any time you feel like it! How about that? 🙂

Happy camping!  #WohoCamper
