{"id":5218,"date":"2018-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/camperstories\/survival-guide-to-campervanning-in-iceland\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T13:03:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T13:03:13","slug":"survival-guide-to-campervanning-in-iceland","status":"publish","type":"camperstories","link":"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/de\/camperstories\/survival-guide-to-campervanning-in-iceland\/","title":{"rendered":"Survival guide to campervanning in Iceland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/blog\/campsites-in-iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renting a camper van<\/a> to explore Iceland and don\u2019t know what to expect, read our handy survival guide with tips and tricks to make your camper van rental a success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jo-Hannas-Camper-Trip.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7326\" title=\"Jo &amp; Hanna's Camper Trip\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jo-Hannas-Camper-Trip-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Jo &amp; Hanna's Camper Trip\" width=\"875\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We (that\u2019s Jo and Hanna) went on our first Icelandic adventure in March 2017 and had the time of our lives: exploring out-of-this-world landscapes, living close to (or in) nature, and meeting great people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Camper-trip-in-the-winter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7327\" title=\"Camper trip in the winter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Camper-trip-in-the-winter-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Camper trip in the winter\" width=\"875\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To give a snapshot of what it was like when we were on the road in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iimC3p0ZbQI&amp;list=PLY0x6RBrQZQehsisiKRbhesix8GiFcG2l&amp;index=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">camper van in Iceland<\/a>, here\u2019s a typical day:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Winter-Camping-Iceland-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7331\" title=\"Winter Camping Iceland\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Winter-Camping-Iceland-2-300x65.jpg\" alt=\"Winter Camping Iceland\" width=\"875\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Good morning, campers<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Sunrise-in-Iceland.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7325\" title=\"Sunrise in Iceland\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Sunrise-in-Iceland-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sunrise in Iceland\" width=\"225\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>See the sunrise:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Waking up in our camper van meant we only needed to open the blinds or doors to witness some of the most incredible sunrises \u2013 even from within our cozy, warm sleeping bags (included in the rental).<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Set up the table:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0We had rented a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renault Trafic<\/a> (sleeps 3) with a table and the space was perfect for us two: we could easily pack away the bedding into storage underneath the back seats and move up the table (which acts as bed support at night) in 2 minutes \u2013 yes, we timed it.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Make breakfast<\/strong><\/span>: We made hot water for coffee and tea on the included portable gas stove and made some extra to take along in a flask for the rest of the day. Other than that we tried to stick to easy-to-prepare breakfast items like Icelandic Sk\u00fdr yogurt (which comes in many different flavors) with or without muesli, bread with cheese or peanut butter, and fruit.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Plan your route:<\/strong>\u00a0O<\/span>ver breakfast we planned our route for the day using the Lonely Planet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/blog\/iceland-travel-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel guide<\/a>. Plus, we checked Google maps on what\u2019s coming up on our route because there\u2019s unlimited WiFi in the van. If you\u2019re worried about driving on snowy roads in the winter time, check if roads are safe at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.road.is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Road.is<\/a> \u2013 we didn\u2019t have any issues driving around in March but some roads were blocked so we had to plan our route around them. The van comes with studded winter tires so driving in the winter is much easier and safer than it would have been back home.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Get a wash:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Most camping grounds have toilets and washrooms, but make sure you have some Icelandic change (ISK 100 coins ideally) for showers. Also, remember to take two toothpastes and two shower gels so you don\u2019t have to wait until the other person is done with their shower.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Prep the van<\/strong><\/span>: Before you start driving, make sure you air the van to get rid of condensation and put away all cutlery, dishes and other loose items in the storage crates at the back \u2013 otherwise they fly around in your camper van.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Staying-warm-in-the-camper-van.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7328\" title=\"Staying warm in the camper van\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Staying-warm-in-the-camper-van-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Staying warm in the camper van\" width=\"875\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Top tip:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0<\/span>Use dishes and cutlery wisely as you have a limited amount and need to plan when and how you wash up around your eating plans. All your kitchen utensils, including washing-up liquid, come with the camper van so you don\u2019t need to bring anything. If you want to be clever, get some biodegradable washing-up liquid, so you can wash up literally anywhere without damaging the environment<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">It\u2019s lunch o\u2019clock<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/South-Iceland-in-winter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7334 size-medium\" title=\"South Iceland in winter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/South-Iceland-in-winter-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"South Iceland in winter\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Live like a local:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0We used the really nice app \u2018Handpicked Iceland\u2019 which had some great insider tips on restaurants, bars, shops, and culture all around Iceland, including some lovely local places to eat.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fill up the car:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Make sure you never run out of fuel. There are many fuel stations in and around Reykjavik but once you get further away from civilization, be smart and fill up at any chance you get. We used a clever app called \u2018<em>Eldsneyti<\/em>\u2019 to tell you how far the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/blog\/travel-apps-for-iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gas station<\/a> is \u2013 we once came extremely close to running out, so we\u2019ve learnt our lesson.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Get some lunch:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0We often skipped lunch and just had small snacks like nuts, energy bars, liquorice (Iceland has loads!), prepped sandwiches or fruit. That way we saved time and could enjoy our lunch in the most amazing locations.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Charge your stuff:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0With so much beautiful scenery, you\u2019ll take way too many pictures. But don\u2019t worry about running out of battery as you can charge your phones and cameras with the built-in charger. Mini USB cables are included in the rental but bring your own just in case. Remember to also charge your Satnav to not get lost \u2013 it\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">included in the rental<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Have a break:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0With your rental comes an Olis card, which gives you a discount if you fill up with fuel at Olis stations. That magic little card also gives you free coffee at any Olis station and we sort of planned our stops around those to enjoy nice coffees (some even with flavoured syrups!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Sleeping-in-a-camper-during-winter-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7329\" title=\"Sleeping in a camper during winter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Sleeping-in-a-camper-during-winter-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Sleeping in a camper during winter\" width=\"875\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Top tip:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Stock up on food and essentials when you can. The cheapest shops are B\u00f3nus and Kr\u00f3nan but we quickly noticed that even there fresh fruit and veg can be quite pricey. We opted for frozen alternatives but couldn\u2019t resist the delicious Icelandic pastries and cakes. Remember to also get some toilet paper \u2013 because you never know \u2013 and extra gas canisters if you\u2019re planning on cooking a lot (in one week we used about 2 cans (medium size) and we cooked twice a day).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A relaxing evening<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Icelandic-coffee.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Icelandic-coffee-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"Icelandic coffee\" width=\"225\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Find a campground:<\/strong><\/span> Campervanning in the winter months means some campsites are closed, so we checked this helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/blog\/campsites-in-iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campsites in Iceland blog<\/a>. When you park the van, make sure it\u2019s facing into the wind, so when you open the side doors they don\u2019t get blown off \u2013 it happens!<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Go for a swim:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0We just loved the local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/blog\/top-10-swimming-pools-in-iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swimming pools<\/a>. Everyone has heard of the Blue Lagoon, but even the smallest village has a local pool. This was a chance to better get to know the lifestyle of the locals, have a chat in a hot tub, and come out as relaxed as a baby seal!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Cook dinner:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0We opted for easy-to-prepare but filling dinners like rice with frozen mixed veggies, sweet potatoes and fish, noodles with sweet and sour sauce, and lots and lots of beans.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Get warm:<\/strong> <\/span>the camper van heating uses a secondary battery that charges when you\u2019re driving. So if you haven\u2019t been driving that much, run the engine for about another hour to charge the battery and then snuggle up in your super-warm sleeping bag.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Check the Aurora forecast:<\/strong>\u00a0E<\/span>very night we used a range of apps to see what our chances of seeing the Northern Lights were. You need to be quite lucky because it needs to be a clear sky, the right location, and the right solar activity. The \u2018My Aurora Forecast\u2019 app was most useful for us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Winter-Campervanning.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7330\" title=\"Winter Campervanning\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rent.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Winter-Campervanning-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Winter Campervanning\" width=\"875\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Top tip:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s YOUR van for the week, so make it yours. We brought fairy lights, an iPad, bunting and our Spotify playlists to make the van comfortable and feel like \u2018home\u2019. We even gave our van a name: everyone, meet Herby.
